As part of the Olympic legacy, the government initially provided £150m of PE and sport funding for primary schools for the academic years 2013/14 and 2014/15. It was then announced that the funding would be extended for a further five years, until 2020. Jointly provided by the departments for Education, Health and Culture and Media and Sport, the money is allocated directly to primary schools ‘to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport’. The funding is ring fenced for PE and sport but schools have the freedom to choose how it is spent.
